Approval of the 3rd Burundian Ombudsman

Mrs. Aimée Laurentine Kanyana is now the third Ombudsman of the Republic of Burundi. She was approved, on November 17, 2022 with 109 votes out of 120 during the plenary organized within the framework of the extraordinary session. She defeated her three other competitors in the race. Honorable Samandari Jean had 5 votes against two for Mr. Giswaswa Evrard and one for Mr. Mazimpaka Issa Désiré.

The Article 245 of the Constitution of Burundi provides that an Ombudsman is approved by 3/4 of MPs and 2/3 of Senators.

By internal instruction No. 130/PAN/014 of October 10, 2022, the Right Honorable Speaker of the National Assembly proceeded to the appointment of the members of the commission in charge of determining the terms of reference and the pre-selection of candidates for the third Ombudsman of the Republic of Burundi.

A total of 13 candidates applied, but only 6 had files in conformity with the call for candidacy. Of the 6 selected candidates, 4 reached the final running.

Mrs. Aimée Laurentine Kanyana was so far the Deputy Chief of Civil Cabinet at the Presidency of the Republic of Burundi but has also held various positions including the ministerial portfolio and the position of Second Vice-Governor of the Central Bank in the past.

A native of Ngozi province, Mrs. Aimée Laurentine Kanyana replaces Hon. Edouard Nduwimana who in turn replaced the late Sheikh Mohamed Rukara.
