The National Assembly approved unanimously and by a show of hands the candidature of Lieutenant General of Police Gervais Ndirakobuca for the post of Prime Minister of the Republic of Burundi during the plenary session of Wednesday, September 7, 2022. In accordance with Article 130, paragraph 1, the Government actions are coordinated by a Prime Minister appointed by the President of the Republic after prior approval of his candidature by the National Assembly and the Senate voting separately by absolute majority of their members. As there are 123 MPs sitting in this 2020-2025 legislature, 63 votes were required. All 113 MPs present at the plenary session, including 8 proxies, voted Yes. Therefore, the appointment was fully approved.
But what is going on? Is the Government resigning? Or is the National Assembly no longer placing its confidence in the departing Prime Minister? Asked the MPs.

In response, the Speaker of the National Assembly drew a parallel between the Head of State and a head of household on whom the coordination of the house depends. As the Vice-President of the Republic, the Prime Minister and all the members of the Government are children of the house, that is, the Cabinet of the President of the Republic, he has full power to correct a deviant or punish an undisciplined person without any other form of trial.
It is in this logic that by decree n°100/105 of September 7, 2022, the President of the Republic of Burundi proposed Lieutenant General of Police Gervais Ndirakobuca to the Burundian Parliament for approval as Prime Minister.
Born in 1970, Lieutenant General of Police Gervais Ndirakobuca is originally from Kibaya, in Bukinanyana commune in Cibitoke province. In addition to his Bachelor’s degree in law obtained at Hope of Africa University in 2013, he underwent several training courses and held various positions, the latest of which is the ministerial portfolio at the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Community Development and Public Security.

He was sworn in on the same day before the President of the Republic and the Parliament meeting in Congress at Kigobe Hemicycle.
