It is at the cost of the sweat that the Burundian currency will be revalued in the concert of nations. This is the point of view of the Speaker of the National Assembly at the end of the community development works that he carried out on Saturday, February 11, 2023, in the village of Migera, Kabezi commune in the province of Bujumbura. It was about transporting conrete for paving of a shed that will host the modern market.
According to the Rt. Hon. Gelase Daniel Ndabirabe, it is a mockery to compare the Burundian BIF to the American dollar.
If ever the work done were to be valuated in terms of money for, millions of BIF would be put back into the country’s treasury, said the Speaker of the Lower chamber of Parliament, before illustrating it with another example.
The price of a Kg of rice is 3,700 BIF, while on the other side of the Kanyaru, it is estimated at 4,000 FRW. Rwandan money is three times stronger than the Burundian franc. So, one Kg of rice normally costs 12,000 Burundian francs therein. Under these conditions, which currency is stronger? Of course, it is the Burundian currency!
Another proof is that Burundians consume what they produce and not the dollar.
Finally, it is meaningless to compare the Burundian franc to the American dollar, concluded the Right Honorable Gelase Daniel Ndabirabe, who instead encouraged his audience to focus more on community development works and cooperative societies.
The Speaker of the National Assembly promised to invite the Minister of Environment, Agriculture and Livestock to attend to the Governor of Bujumbura Province’s concern. According to engineer Désiré Nsengiyumva, banana and cassava crops are disappearing in Bujumbura province.
